OpenRCT2 Server Guide

To run an OpenRCT2 server, the games files for RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 (RCT2) and/or RollerCoaster Tycoon (RCT1) are required. This in particular is to supply the maps.

By default, AMP is configured to download both games from Steam to directories inside the instance datastore (called rct2game and rct1game). This requires the games to be owned by the server owner on Steam:

  • RCT2: app ID 285330
  • RCT1: app ID 285310

You can disable this download for either or both games by selecting the relevant toggle under the SteamCMD and Updates menu in the instance.

You might want to do this, for example, if you only want to play on one set of game maps. Or you might already have the game files and want to supply them yourself - in this case you must upload them to the relevant directory in the datastore, using AMP’s File Manager or AMP’s SFTP to ensure correct file permissions.

Note that the map selector under Official Scenario in the OpenRCT2 Server Settings menu will not work if the relevant game files are not installed, or if the game files are installed from another source but the relevant file names are different to those that are downloaded from Steam. In the latter situation, you can rename the file names manually.

Alternatively, upload the files to the user-data/scenario directory in the datastore, and select “Load Custom Scenario” as the Host Mode and specify the relevant file name under Custom Scenario.
