Run the Minecraft server within Ubuntu server Proxmox VM

Problem Description

Issue

A few minutes after starting the server Ubuntu crashes completely, saying “out of memory” and not responding to restart or shutdown signals in Proxmox. The AMP webserver also stops running. The physical server has 16GB of RAM, the VM is configured with 14.65GB of RAM, and the Minecraft server is configured with 8000MiB. Not sure if it’s a configuration error on my side or not, apologies if it is.

Reproduction Steps

  • Created Ubuntu Server Virtual Machine in Proxmox
  • Installed AMP and configured first Minecraft server
  • Wait for about 10 minutes after starting up, then it crashes

That’s an odd one for sure. Do you have any other servers running on that VM?

no, just the one, installed AMP just yesterday. Also testing it further, it doesn’t seem to crash when the Minecraft server isn’t running

Is it a modded server, or just a stock vanilla server you were testing with?

Fabric server with many mods, primarily for performance. Do you want a full list of the mods?

Nah, but I would suggest testing briefly without the mods, see how a plain Fabric server runs. (easiest would be to rename the mods directory in AMP)
It would at the very least tell you if the mods are causing the issue.
(Take a backup of the world if you have any progress on it)

did this and it crashed immediately when I started the server. After restarting the VM it worked, but it felt really laggy and said “Can’t keep up! Is the server overloaded?” every few seconds with a single player online. The VM has 32 Xeon e5-2697a v4 threads assigned so I don’t think it’s a hardware issue.

Used an older version of the modpack which fixed all of the performance issues and hasn’t crashed yet, likely user error from the mod configuration. Hopefully working now, thanks for the help!

edit: let it run overnight and it did it again, here’s a screenshot of the terminal

And I just created a new, blank Minecraft server and it immediately crashed
