Dune Server: Can't join Deep Desert

OS Name/Version:

Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS, 64-bit

Product Name/Version:

AMP 2.8.0.2 (Proteus), built 12/07/2026 17:27
GenericModule 2.8.0.2
Dune: Awakening dedicated server 1.4.10.3
NetCL 2036754

Problem Description:

I am running a self-hosted Dune: Awakening server through AMP on Ubuntu.

Joining the private server and playing in Hagga Basin works normally. Travelling from Hagga Basin to the Overland Map also works.

However, when attempting to enter the Deep Desert, the client displays two apparently identical Deep Desert instances. Selecting either instance opens the server password prompt. After entering the password, the client displays error P83.

The result is identical for both displayed Deep Desert instances. It also makes no difference whether the correct or an incorrect password is entered.

The server-side log shows that the request fails before a destination server or login token is assigned. The Overmap finds two matching partitions for the same Deep Desert location and dimension, therefore passes no partition to the Director. The Director then returns Code 3 with a null DestinationPartitionId, followed by “Invalid dimension”.

Relevant log output:

[ue5-Overmap] LogTravelDestination: Initiating travel to [Overland_to_DeepDesert1_S2] dimension [0].

[ue5-Overmap] LogTravel: Found multiple partitions (2) for location X=94970.000 Y=1080730.000 Z=17040.000, map DeepDesert and dimension 0. Passing no partition to travel request

[director] Received travel request for 1 player(s) to DeepDesert_1 (instancingMode=Dimension)

[director] Notified player(s) of travel response Overmap2:
{"Code":3,"OriginId":"Overmap2","MapName":"DeepDesert_1","DestinationPartitionId":null,"QueueToken":null,"QueueState":null,"ServerState":null,"BroadcastExchange":null,"ServerFull":false,"ServerLoginToken":"","RetryTime":null}

[ue5-Overmap] LogTravel: Error: sb7Q2$ Invalid dimension

[ue5-Overmap] LogTravelEvent: Error: [Failure] FlowType:"Travel", Stage:"Request", Reason:"TravelVolumeOverland", ErrorMessage:"sb7Q2$ Invalid dimension"

The Deep Desert server itself starts successfully:

[mock-k8s] DeepDesert_1/p8 UE5 live
[mock-k8s] Active instances: 5

The Deep Desert process continues reporting itself as ready. There is only one unique Deep Desert process, one server ID and one partition ID in the log.

The generated BattleGroup configuration also contains only one Deep Desert partition and one replica:

map: DeepDesert_1
partition id: 8
dimension: 0
disabled: false
partitions: [8]
replicas: 1

Another possibly relevant detail is that the generated configuration contains:

DeepDesert_1=ClassicalInstancing

but the Director processes the travel request as:

instancingMode=Dimension

I found an earlier report with the same two-instance popup and the same Code 3 / Invalid dimension output, but no resolution was posted:

Steps to reproduce:

Step 1

Start the Dune: Awakening AMP instance and wait until the Survival, Overmap and DeepDesert_1 processes are running. DeepDesert_1 reports ready=true.

Step 2

Connect to the private server normally and load into Hagga Basin.

Step 3

Travel from Hagga Basin to the Overland Map.

Step 4

Select the Deep Desert destination. The client displays two apparently identical Deep Desert instances.

Step 5

Select either of the displayed instances and enter the server password.

Step 6

The client displays error P83. The server log reports two matching partitions, Code 3, DestinationPartitionId=null and “Invalid dimension”.

The issue is reproducible with either displayed Deep Desert instance and with both correct and incorrect passwords.

Actions taken to resolve so far:

  • Updated AMP to version 2.8.0.2, Dune: Awakening server to version 1.4.10.3 / NetCL 2036754.
  • Updated the Ubuntu host packages
  • Rebooted the host. Restarted the Dune AMP instance after updating.
  • Confirmed that memory usage during the failure is only approximately 28–30%.
  • Confirmed there are no out-of-memory errors, process crashes or fatal server errors during the travel attempt.
  • Confirmed that joining Hagga Basin and travelling to the Overland Map work normally. Entering Arakeen or Teststation from Overland map is working.
  • Confirmed that the DeepDesert_1 UE5 process is running and continuously reports ready=true.
  • Confirmed that only one DeepDesert_1 process, one server ID and one configured Deep Desert partition exist locally.
  • Tested both Deep Desert entries displayed by the client.
  • Tested with a simple temporary server password.
  • Tested with both the correct and an incorrect password; the result is identical.
  • Confirmed that the failure happens before DestinationPartitionId or ServerLoginToken is assigned.
  • Confirmed that port forwarding and general external connectivity work, since joining and travelling between Hagga Basin and the Overland Map succeed.
  • Searched the CubeCoders forum and found the related unresolved report linked above.
